Does each player start out with 16
pieces or 8 pieces and 8 Pawns?
Various books I have read have me confused about this.

Dear viewer,
Both calls are correct. Players start a game with 32 pieces on
the board or 16 pieces each.
The Queen and Rooks are called major
pieces, Bishops and Knights are minor pieces and the remaining
are the Pawns and King.
