Hello and thank you for your site.

Can you tell me if there are any consequences for incorrectly calling checkmate on your opponent?

In other words, if one player believes incorrectly that he has his opponent checkmated and calls “checkmate” when in fact there is a way for the opponent to escape the mate by either moving the king, blocking the attack, or capturing the attacking piece.

Does the game continue after the incorrect statement of “checkmate” or is it a loss for the player calling “checkmate” or a draw or stalemate?

Thank you for your time,
Doug Beckley

Dear viewer,

There should never be consequences for incorrectly calling checkmate on your opponent.

After the position is reviewed and found no check, checkmate, draw or stalemate, the game shall continue as if such call had never happened.

Also, there is no limit to such premature calls.
