Hello
chessposter,
While playing with a friend, I was in a
position to capture one of his Pawns but I
decided not to because he could get into a
better position.
He told me
that I was obligated to capture his piece.
Is he right?

Your friend is wrong on this one
since capturing a piece is not
obligatory in Chess.
The only case when you must capture
a piece is when your King is in check and you need to capture
the attacking piece to remove the threat.
Other than that, any player has a
choice of
whether capture or not.
