Despite playing Chess for more than 30 years, when I resign a game I don't lay down my King and I only shake hands with my opponent.

Is there some rule indicating to lay down the King?

Greetings and excellent site.

Dear viewer,

Verbally announcing the intention to resign the game or shaking hands as you do it is widely acceptable.

Although there is no need to lay down the King, this has been the most popular form of resigning a game by most Chess players for many years. it is just another way to concede a game.
